Phase 1: Design

It consists in performing a study aimed at determining the Portal objectives, the public or the communities that the portal will address, the information to be published and the way in which this information will be targeted.  The product obtained will be the following:  
 
  • Portal Vision (Business Model) 
  • Portal navigation map  
  • Portal graphic design  
  • Contents Management  
  • Architecture  (Hardware and Software required)
 

Site Vision – Business Model


In this stage, you must analyze the Portal objective and the public that the portal will address. Once the mentioned elements have been defined, it is important to analyze the competence and/or current trends in portals of similar characteristics. From this analysis you will obtain the following:  
  • Purpose 
  • Target Audience 
  • Macro-level content: Information and Services complying with the requirements of the potential visitors.  
  • Strategic alliances  
  • Content presentation strategy  
 

Portal navigation map


Based on what was analyzed in the previous stage, in this stage you will define the portal navigation structure establishing the relation between the different portal pages. This will allow visualizing clearly the way in which the portal information, applications and services will be divided. The result obtained from this analysis will be the following:  
 
  • Portal Map
  • Different channels within the portal   
  • Portal pages  
  • Structure of the Portal navigation tree (menus)  
  • Definition of Services (forums, chats, search mechanisms, FAQ’s, surveys, newsletters)
  • Advertising Mechanisms (Banners and other mechanisms) 
  • Definition of the requirements for the integration with other portals  
 

Portal graphic design


Based on the definitions of the previous stages, you will work together with the web designers to define the Portal aesthetic design. The product of this stage will be the portal graphic design in HTML and the images making up the design of the different portal pages and spreadsheets.  
 

Content Management


Definition of content sources and processes for content incorporation and administration. For this, you will have to define the following:  
 
Definition of the content structure (Components)  
Definition or the Work Flow for content incorporation and management. 
Definition of the support required by the Portal services  
Definition of the administrative processes customization to integrate them to the Content edition and publication.

  • Availability Requirements  
  • Contingency Requirements  
  • Definition Hosting vs. Housing
  • Definition of Servers: 
Database Server  
Web Server  
Application Server  
Chat Server 
Images Server  
Mail Server  
File Server  
Multimedia Server (Audio and Video)
  • Definition of the Platform
Definition of the generation Language (C/SQL, C#)
Base Software of the different servers 
Hardware needed for the required servers  
  • Definition of the Site security  
Security at Hardware level
Security at base Software level
Security at Programming level
